Update – CIZA Thadée Reportedly Detained in Kirundo

On 5 June 2026, our organization issued an alert regarding the disappearance of CIZA Thadée, a Burundian national who had previously been residing in Rwanda. We have since received consistent information indicating that he is being held in the detention cells of the Judicial Police (Police Judiciaire – PJ) in Kirundo, located in the administrative center of Kirundo Commune, Butanyerera Province.

According to the information gathered, CIZA Thadée is accused of collaborating with the M23 movement, an armed rebel group operating against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

However, individuals who have mobilized to raise awareness about his situation strongly reject these allegations. They maintain that, although he lived in Rwanda, CIZA Thadée has never had any affiliation with the M23 movement.

This case continues to raise serious concerns and remains under close monitoring. We will continue our efforts to obtain further information regarding his situation and to ensure that his fundamental rights are fully respected.
