Alert – Presumed Enforced Disappearance of a Citizen Following His Arrest by Police Officers

A citizen was allegedly abducted by police officers under troubling circumstances. As of today, his place of detention remains unknown, and the reasons for his arrest have not been disclosed.

The individual concerned is NDAYISABA Déogratias, 37 years old. He is from Gikungu neighborhood, Gihosha zone, Ntahangwa Commune, Bujumbura Province, where he lives with his wife and their three children. He earns his living as a small-scale trader and is not affiliated with any political party.

Circumstances of the Presumed Abduction

According to information collected by King Umurundi Freedom, on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at around 9:00 a.m., NDAYISABA Déogratias left his home on a motorcycle heading to the Gare du Nord to purchase an electrical cable.

Along the Gasenyi road, a white double-cab pickup truck with tinted windows reportedly began following the motorcycle. Noticing that the vehicle was driving very closely behind them, the motorcycle rider briefly stopped to allow it to pass. However, the vehicle did not overtake them. Instead, it remained behind them and continued following them at a short distance.

Upon arriving at the Gare du Nord, near the taxi station and the BANCOBU branch, NDAYISABA Déogratias got off the motorcycle to make his purchase. At that moment, several police officers reportedly got out of the vehicle and rushed toward him to arrest him.

According to witnesses present at the scene, he allegedly attempted to flee but fell to the ground, dropping his mobile phone. The police officers reportedly immediately subdued him, beat him, and forced him into the vehicle before driving away. The vehicle’s registration number could not be identified.

Witnesses stated that the vehicle initially drove toward the Gasenyi road before making a U-turn and heading toward downtown Bujumbura, where it subsequently disappeared from sight.

Since this operation, no information has been provided regarding the whereabouts of NDAYISABA Déogratias or the reasons for his presumed arrest.

His family, relatives, and friends are deeply concerned about his safety. They are calling on the competent authorities to immediately disclose his place of detention, guarantee his physical integrity, and prevent any risk of torture, ill-treatment, or enforced disappearance.

They also call on the Independent National Human Rights Commission (CNIDH) to closely monitor this case and undertake all necessary steps to establish the truth regarding the fate and whereabouts of NDAYISABA Déogratias.
