A young girl, NIZIGAMA Corinne, was abducted on the evening of Monday, January 8, 2024, in Bujumbura. She is 24 years old and originates from Mirama hill, Muyira zone, Kanyosha commune, Bujumbura Province.
According to witnesses who observed the arrest, Corine was traveling on a public transport bus from the city center to her home located in Gasenyi, Gihosha zone, Ntahangwa Commune.
At around 8:20 p.m., she got off the bus at a place commonly known as “ku ma salon”, near her usual residence in Gasenyi. Shortly afterward, a gray Toyota TI vehicle with tinted windows, bearing license plate B 0587 A, stopped nearby. Inside were intelligence officers wearing police uniforms.
One officer got out of the vehicle, seized Corine, and forced her into the car. Corine screamed and called for help, but another man immediately stepped out of the vehicle holding a firearm, causing fear among the bystanders. Out of panic, no one intervened. Corinne was taken away by force without any assistance.
The family of Corinne NIZIGAMA is extremely worried, as they do not know the reasons for this violent arrest nor where she is being held, especially since it occurred at night. They fear for her safety and physical integrity and call upon the security authorities to ensure that she is not harmed or subjected to enforced disappearance.
On behalf of our organization, we urge the National Independent Human Rights Commission (CNIDH) to urgently and closely follow up on this case, to ensure that this citizen is not mistreated and that her family is promptly informed of her whereabouts.
