A New Alarming Incident Shakes Burundi’s Economic Capital
MUGISHA Didier, 38 years old and married, was abducted in broad daylight in Bujumbura on September 24, 2025, before several stunned witnesses.
A resident of the Nyabugete neighborhood, Mugere commune, Mr. Mugisha is originally from Mugamba commune in Bururi province, now incorporated into Matana commune in Burunga province, in the south of the country.
A Violent Arrest in the City Center
According to eyewitnesses, Mugisha Didier had just withdrawn money from the headquarters of BANCOBU, located in the heart of downtown Bujumbura.
Around 11:30 a.m., as he was leaving the premises, six men intercepted him outside. Two were wearing police uniforms, while the other four were in civilian clothing. They arrived in a white double-cab pickup truck with no license plates.
The agents grabbed Mr. Mugisha violently, forced him into the vehicle, and immediately sped away, to the shock and helplessness of nearby bystanders.
No Explanation or Warrant Presented
Witnesses report that no legal document or warrant was presented during the arrest. Local residents, disturbed by the brutality of the incident, fear for the safety and whereabouts of Mr. Mugisha Didier.
The circumstances strongly suggest a case of arbitrary detention or even enforced disappearance—patterns already observed in several recent incidents.
Urgent Call to Burundian Authorities
In response to this concerning situation, many voices are calling for urgent clarification from the relevant authorities.
“We call on the National Independent Human Rights Commission (CNIDH) and the Burundian security services to immediately locate Mr. Mugisha Didier, guarantee his safety, and ensure full respect for his fundamental rights,” stated King Umurundi Freedom.
The organization emphasizes that any abduction carried out without legal grounds constitutes a grave human rights violation and undermines the rule of law in Burundi.
