The human rights organizations Ligue Iteka and King Umurundi Freedom, as part of the UMUSEKE program, warn of the alarming humanitarian situation of Congolese refugees, particularly those at the Busuma site (Ruyigi).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

In less than three months, over 700 refugees, mostly children, are reported to have died due to extremely precarious living conditions, including famine, poor hygiene, and almost nonexistent access to healthcare.<\/p>

High fees are also reportedly being demanded from refugees wishing to return voluntarily to their country, in violation of the 1951 Geneva Convention, which protects the right to voluntary return and freedom of movement.<\/p>

While welcoming some recent improvements, the two organizations call on the Government of Burundi, the UNHCR, and national and international partners to accelerate the establishment of a transparent, safe, and internationally compliant mechanism for voluntary refugee repatriation.<\/p>

Families spend their days burying their loved ones, as at least 10 deaths are recorded each day. \"\" \"\"<\/p>

The statement is signed by Anschaire NIKOYAGIZE, President of Ligue Iteka, and Vianney NIZIGIYIMANA, President of King Umurundi Freedom.<\/p>

The dignity and protection of refugees must remain an absolute priority.<\/p>
