Concerning food situation in certain prisons

Inmates in the prisons of Gitega and Ngozi are facing a worrying food situation, marked by insufficient nutrition, particularly following approximately five days without the distribution of beans.

According to several testimonies collected from detainees, there are ongoing difficulties in accessing adequate food. Beans, which constitute an essential part of their daily ration, have reportedly not been distributed for about five days, with the last distribution dating back to Thursday, April 30, 2026.

During this period, only flour has reportedly been distributed, and irregularly—about once or twice a week—a situation that does not adequately meet the basic nutritional needs of detainees.

The King Umurundi Freedom Organization expresses its deep concern regarding this situation and calls on the relevant authorities to carry out an urgent assessment. It recommends the implementation of appropriate measures to ensure that detainees have regular access to sufficient food, in line with minimum standards of human dignity.
