A Tragic Night During the Holiday
On the night of April 4–5, 2026, corresponding to Easter night, a shocking incident occurred on Kibungere Hill in the Nyabihanga commune, formerly part of Mwaro province and now attached to Gitega province. A man was shot and killed by a police officer in a local bar, sparking strong emotions among the population.
The Victim: A Well-Known Local Father
The victim, Nestor Nininahazwe, nicknamed Gasazi, was about 30 years old. A former motorcycle taxi driver, he had recently been working at a bar called KWIHURIRO in Kibungere. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
The Incident: An Altercation Turns Fatal
According to multiple consistent eyewitness accounts, the police officer, identified as Osias Irankunda, entered the bar aggressively, harassing patrons and attempting to take their drinks by force.
One witness reported:
“He was hitting people and demanding to drink their beverages. When Gasazi opposed him, the officer left, returned with his gun, and shot him multiple times in the chest before fleeing.”
Fleeing and Arrest: Suspect Found in a Church
After the incident, Osias Irankunda fled and sought refuge in a church, claiming he wanted to inform a priest of his actions. He was quickly restrained and handed over to the administrative and police authorities of Nyabihanga commune, who arrested him along with the victim’s body.
Public Outrage: Calls for Justice
The local population has expressed strong indignation, demanding that justice be served without leniency. They are also calling for stricter measures, including prohibiting police officers from entering drinking establishments while armed.
