The human rights organizations Burundian League for Human Rights ITEKA and King Umurundi Freedom have addressed a letter to His Excellency Mr. Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi, drawing his attention to the situation of Burundian nationals in Kenya, as well as the economic difficulties affecting the livelihoods of many citizens.
The two organizations call on the Burundian authorities to protect Burundian nationals affected by the situation in Kenya, while prioritizing dialogue and avoiding any retaliatory measures against Kenyan nationals who are legally residing in Burundi.
They also emphasize that the protection of citizens must begin in Burundi by addressing the economic difficulties that are forcing some Burundians to leave the country. In particular, they call for support for small-scale economic operators, improved access to fuel and electricity, stronger fire protection measures in markets, and effective assistance for people affected by such incidents.
Through this appeal, signed respectively by Anschaire NIKOYAGIZE and Vianney NIZIGIYIMANA, the two organizations call for concrete and sustainable measures that will enable citizens to earn a dignified living from their work in Burundi and make migration a choice rather than a necessity for survival.
