Alert: Critical situation of Burundian returnees from Tanzania

Within the framework of the UMUSEKE program, human rights organizations, Ligue Iteka and King Umurundi Freedom, are raising concern about the alarming situation of Burundian returnees expelled from Tanzania.

The Nyabitare transit site, designed to host 500 to 600 people, is now severely overcrowded, with more than 1,400 individuals recorded within a few days. Living conditions are extremely poor, with limited access to shelter, clean water, food, and healthcare.

The absence of several humanitarian organizations is worsening the situation, leading to tragic consequences, including the death of an elderly woman and complications during childbirth. Many returnees also show signs of violence suffered in Tanzania.

Delays in financial and logistical assistance from the UNHCR are prolonging their stay under difficult conditions, increasing their vulnerability.

In response to this crisis, the organizations call on the Burundian government and the UNHCR to act urgently to ensure a safe, dignified, and rights-respecting return, including improving access to healthcare, strengthening humanitarian assistance, and investigating the reported violence.

The alert document is signed by Vianney Nizigiyimana and Anschaire Nikoyagize.
