A group of Burundian civil servants, the majority of whom are newly recruited teachers, have raised the alarm after waiting for several months without receiving their salaries. They are calling on the relevant authorities to take urgent action to resolve their situation.
Recruited in November 2025, these public employees say they completed all the required administrative procedures as soon as they took up their duties. In accordance with the established procedures, they submitted all the necessary documentation to the Ministry in charge of Labour and the Civil Service. Despite fulfilling every requirement, they are still waiting to receive their first salary.
To date, the affected employees say they are living in severe hardship. This situation has pushed many families into growing poverty, depriving them of their main source of income and exposing them to serious socio-economic difficulties. They say they no longer know where to turn and have lost hope that their situation will be resolved anytime soon. According to their testimonies, the numerous inquiries they have made to the ministry have yielded no clear or satisfactory response.
“We ask that our situation be brought to the attention of the authorities because what we are going through is beyond belief. Since the end of last year, we have submitted all our documents to the Ministry of the Civil Service and Labour. Our files are still there, with no explanation, and we have yet to receive our salaries. Whenever we seek information, no one seems to know where our files stand. Eventually, we are left with no choice but to remain silent,” said one of the affected civil servants.
The affected employees are urgently appealing to the competent authorities to intervene so that their salaries can finally be paid. They stress that they have continued to carry out their duties professionally despite the severe financial hardships facing them and their families.
