Residents denounce what they describe as an abusive financial contribution imposed by their neighborhood leader
“The money we are being forced to pay amounts to organized extortion by the neighborhood leader. We call for this practice to stop, as it does not exist anywhere else.” This is how residents expressed their dissatisfaction.»
Residents of Kumahoro Quarter, Kirundo Zone, Kirundo Commune, Butanyerera Province, have voiced their opposition to a measure recently introduced by MUKANDANGA Jaella, the head of the quarter.
According to testimonies collected by King Umurundi Freedom, she has introduced a booklet presented as being intended for the monitoring of community work while requiring every household to obtain one upon payment of 2,000 Burundian francs (2,000 BIF).
Residents say they do not understand the purpose of this booklet, especially given the severe economic hardships they are facing. They consider this measure to be an unjustified financial burden and suspect that it was introduced to generate income for the neighborhood leader. According to them, no other locality has implemented a similar practice.
In conclusion, the residents of Kumahoro Quarter are calling on the relevant administrative authorities to put an end to this initiative, which they consider to be an additional burden on households already struggling with difficult economic conditions.
