Following the explosions that occurred on March 31, 2026, in Bujumbura, our organizations, King Umurundi Freedom and Ligue Iteka, through the UMUSEKE program, are issuing an alert regarding the serious consequences of this event. These explosions caused significant human and material losses, particularly in the neighborhoods of Kinanira and Mpimba, also affecting the central prison and certain military bases.
We call for:
A transparent assessment of the damage;
The immediate securing of the affected areas to protect the population;
Urgent care for the victims, including affected families and children.
We also call for the establishment of a team of independent experts tasked with producing a comprehensive report on the causes and consequences of these explosions, as well as a plan for reparations and compensation for the victims.
Our thoughts are with the affected families and the injured. We urge all concerned parties to exercise restraint, solidarity, and responsibility in managing this tragedy.
