Where is Désiré NDAYISENGA?
Since the night of 27 July 2025, this question has haunted the family, relatives, and residents of Kayanza Commune. Désiré NDAYISENGA, a 48-year-old former Burundian soldier, has been reported missing under troubling circumstances, raising fears of an abduction or enforced disappearance.
🔶 Profile of the Missing Person
Désiré NDAYISENGA is a retired member of the armed forces, having left the army in 2022. After his retirement, he resettled on Kirema Hill, in Kayanza Zone and Commune, Butanyerera Province, where he led a quiet civilian life.
According to his relatives, he was not involved in any known criminal activity and was not subject to any judicial proceedings to their knowledge.
🔶 Circumstances of the Disappearance
The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, 27 July 2025, at a place locally known as “au barrière”, located in Kayanza Commune. That evening, Désiré NDAYISENGA was in the company of other people, having drinks in a normal, calm atmosphere.
He had arrived at the location on his personal motorcycle, which he regularly used for transportation. The motorcycle, registration number GA 1259, is currently missing, just like its owner.
At around 8:00 p.m., Désiré reportedly informed those present that a friend had contacted him, asking him to come and pick him up using his motorcycle. Consistent witness accounts indicate that at that moment, he was exchanging messages via WhatsApp with this person, whose identity remains unknown.
Shortly afterward, Désiré left the location alone, stating that he was going to meet that person. This was the last time he was seen.
🔶 Complete Disappearance and Alarming Silence
Since that departure, Désiré NDAYISENGA has shown no sign of life.
His mobile phone is unreachable, no communication has been established, and no trace of his motorcycle has been found. This sudden and total disappearance immediately raised serious concern among his family and close contacts.
🔶 Suspicions of a Premeditated Trap
Information later gathered from relatives and local sources suggests that Désiré NDAYISENGA may have been lured into a carefully planned trap. According to these accounts, agents of the intelligence services, allegedly coming from Bujumbura, may have been waiting for him and forcibly apprehended him, taking him to an unknown destination along with his motorcycle.
Although this information has not yet been officially confirmed, it reinforces fears of an operation carried out outside any legal framework, without a known arrest warrant or notification to the family.
🔶 No Official Information to Date
As of now, no administrative, judicial, or security authority has communicated regarding:
the reasons for the alleged arrest of Désiré NDAYISENGA,
● his possible place of detention,
● or his state of health.
This total lack of information continues to fuel growing anxiety among his family and the local population.
Call for Urgent Action by the Authorities
The family, friends, and acquaintances of Désiré NDAYISENGA issue an urgent appeal to the Burundian authorities, particularly the security services and judicial institutions, to ensure that:
● Désiré NDAYISENGA’s whereabouts are immediately disclosed,
● and that his fundamental rights are fully respected, in accordance with the law and Burundi’s human rights commitments.
They stress that no citizen should be deprived of liberty without due legal process, nor held in secret detention.
🔶 A Broader Concern
This disappearance occurs within a national context marked by repeated reports of disappearances and abductions involving civilians and former members of the defense forces. Human rights defenders warn that, if confirmed, such practices could seriously undermine the rule of law, public safety, and trust in state institutions.
