Human rights organizations Ligue Iteka and King Umurundi Freedom express their deep concern over the situation of Congolese refugees in Burundi.

Through their joint program UMUSEKE, they warn of obstacles imposed by the Burundian government that prevent these refugees from voluntarily returning to their country of origin. Respect for voluntary repatriation, human dignity, and fundamental rights remains essential.

Attached, a video bears witness to the willingness of Congolese refugees from Busuma camp (Ruyigi), Buhumuza Province, to return home on January 16, 2026, despite being forced to remain in the camp. This situation highlights the injustice and the violation of their fundamental rights.

The document is signed by Anschaire Nikoyagize and Vianney Nizigiyimana, Presidents of the respective organizations.
