Over a Month After His Presumed Arrest, Murengera Majaliwa Remains Missing — Growing Concern for Truth and Justice.
More than a month after his presumed arrest, Murengera Majaliwa, a Burundian citizen from Cankuzo commune, remains missing. To date, no official information has been released regarding his whereabouts or health status, raising deep concern among his family and the local population.
🔶 Identity of the Victim.
Murengera Majaliwa, 60 years old, hails from Musenyi hill in Cankuzo commune, Buhumuza province. He is married and a father of five. Known for his past political involvement with the UPD-Zigamibanga party, he worked as a local transporter, driving a Probox vehicle mainly in Cankuzo commune.
🔶 Forced Exile and Return Under Surveillance.
In 2015, amid the political crisis surrounding the third term of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza, Murengera felt his life was in danger and fled to Tanzania, where he lived for about seven years. Upon returning to Burundi in 2022, he resettled in his home village of Musenyi. However, local sources indicate that he remained under close surveillance, particularly by members of the Imbonerakure youth militia, who suspected him of opposing the controversial third term. Despite this tense environment, he was attempting to rebuild his life through modest economic activity. He had been working as a driver transporting passengers in a Probox for nearly a year before his disappearance.
🔶 Opaque Arrest and Disappearance
On November 28, 2025, Murengera Majaliwa was contacted by individuals requesting a transportation service to the Cankuzo commune center. Shortly after his arrival, an unidentified double-cabin vehicle with tinted windows and no license plates suddenly appeared at the scene. Men reportedly affiliated with the intelligence services proceeded to apprehend him.
He was forcibly taken into the vehicle, while one of the agents drove off in his Probox car. The convoy then left in the direction of Ruyigi commune. Since that day, Murengera Majaliwa has not been seen again. His phone remains unreachable, and all efforts by his family to locate him have so far been in vain.
🔶 Call to Authorities
His family and loved ones say they are living in constant fear, having no knowledge of the reasons for his arrest. They have expressed serious concerns for his safety and denounced what they consider a case of enforced disappearance.
They are urgently calling on the relevant authorities to shed full light on this case and to immediately disclose Murengera Majaliwa’s whereabouts.
